Haiti Volunteer Page

Who?

We will be joining with the Grace Fuller Center, a partnership between the Fuller Center for Housing and Grace International.

What?

OSH will be building 6 homes over the course of approximately 6 weeks as part of the Lambi project of 56 homes overall. The families will be selected from among those currently living in the tent city that developed on the grounds of the Grace International facility.  Our commitment will hopefully provide a spark that will get families into homes much quicker and hurry the project to completion. The homes are duplex and constructed out of cement and cement block with metal roofs. Each house has one room and measures 14 x 20 with front and back porch areas which will increase living area. A site plan of the Lambi site can be found here

When?

Three trips are currently scheduled for the Haiti builds. The trips have been scheduled as 6 days, with travel to Haiti on a Sunday and home on a Saturday.  We will work a full day at the site Monday through Friday.  Volunteers will need to enter their Trip ID when they register:

Trip Date – Trip ID

March 11  –  90028

March 25  –  90029

April 8  -  90030

Where?

The Lambi project is located between the cities of Carrefour and Leogane and not very far west of the capital of Port au Prince. OSH will be staying in Leogane at the Residence Filariose, a project of Notre Dame University.  The Residence is a distance from the worksite, but offers contact with the community, activities for the volunteers, clean comfortable quarters and good food.

Cost?

Our goal is to make the trip as financially accessible to our volunteers as possible. The volunteer fee is set at $590 and the construction material contributions have been set at $400 minimum for a total of $990. The beautiful aspect of this is that out of the $990 only $35 goes for administrative costs,, so a vast majority of the funds are being reinvested in country. For example most of the lodging fees that we pay to the residence go to support a project that is fighting a horrific disease, filariasis, which is quite common in Haiti.

Payments?

Payments must be made 45 days prior to the trip date.

We also accept the payments made to One Small House.  If you want to pay by check, make it out to One Small House, include this form and mail it to the following address:

One Small House – PO Box 0798 – Brewster, NY 10509-0798

Or, payments can also be made securely online.  Be sure you choose the proper payment that corresponds with your trip.

March 11 – 90028                         March 25 – 90029                             April 8 – 90030

Transportation?

The cost of air travel to Haiti is the responsibility of the volunteer.  Upon arrival in Haiti, a driver from the residence will meet the group at the airport and drive us to the residence, a trip of 1&1/2 to 2 hours.  Each trip has a Volunteer Coordinator who will coordinate travel so that we can minimize/eliminate the need for multiple trips to and from the residence in Haiti.  Within a few days of your registration you will be contacted by the travel coordinator.  Please do not purchase your air travel without coordination first with the Volunteer Coordinator handling transportation.  Your transportation is provided for the daily trips to the worksite and to the airport for the flight home.

Tools and Materials?

Both are to be supplied by the Grace Fuller Center site management. If OSH volunteers need to supplement certain tools we will advise you of this in advance of the trip.

Health and Safety?

Volunteers and leaders should follow CDC advisories concerning vaccinations and medications and make their own assessment of participation in this mission trip.

See: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/haiti.htm   The food at the residence is prepared to US standards and clean water and ice is supplied at the worksite. The climate is warm and humid, with a daily temperature range of 75 to 87 degrees.

Volunteers?

We will want at least 10 people per house, or 20 people per build trip. Since a good deal of the work is general manual labor, no specific skill set will be required, just general good health. The age limits for minors are ages 14 and above accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Volunteers will need to register through the Fuller Center website http://fullercenter.org/global-builders/register and need to identify themselves as “One Small House” volunteers.

Next Steps?

After registering on the Fuller Center website you will be contacted by the Team Captain or Volunteer Coordinator concerning further trip details.  For questions contact Joe (joe@onesmallhouse.org)
