Of the over thirty homes we’ve built at One Small House, very few of them have been the same color. While this may limit our ability to buy copious amounts of paint in bulk (and cost us a few extra dollars), we do so because we want each family to choose the color of their new home. We’ve had homes ranging from lime green to watermelon pink (because it was the mom’s favorite food). It is a very special process and is a simple way to show the families that we’re trying to do so much more than simply build four walls and leave. We want to give them a place they’re proud to call home. And right now, Robert Katz is down in Mexico visiting the ten families we’ll be helping in December and giving them a chance to choose the paint. We’ll keep you posted on which colors they choose!

]]> http://onesmallhouse.org/2011/10/favorite-color/feed/ 0 Update from Casa de Salud http://onesmallhouse.org/2011/09/update-from-casa-de-salud/ http://onesmallhouse.org/2011/09/update-from-casa-de-salud/#comments Mon, 12 Sep 2011 18:05:52 +0000 Onesmallhouse http://onesmallhouse.org/wordpress/?p=477 The Casa de Salud was built to address the health disparities felt by the residents of Lazaro Cardenas.  Since its completion, the clinic has been providing free health care to more than 40 patients per day of operation (it is currently open four days a week).  But more than this, the clinic has evolved into a community center that is becoming the social, educational and vocational hub of the community.  During our build in March, one of our volunteers, Maura Kelly captured some of the action.  Here is a photo of one of the many classes offered:
