Casa de Salud

The Casa de Salud (House of Health), a community health clinic in Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico was built by volunteers from One Small House in December of 2010. By nearly every measure, this project was the largest that One Small House has ever been a part of. While a typical home built by OSH costs around $7,000, this clinic cost nearly $50,000. Built by over 40 volunteers and funded by over 700 donors, this project continues to be a resounding success. Since its doors opened in January of 2011, the clinic has sees nearly 40 patients per day. Medical and pharmaceutical services are offered free of charge. In addition, the clinic also serves as a community center, providing classes ranging from English to dance for the residents of Lazaro Cardenas.

Thanks to an incredible staff of volunteers who run the clinic, the autonomous center has taken this project and made it into so much more than could ever could have been imagined. As a result of their initiative and growth, One Small House has continued in a supportive role. In response to a growing number of young children who frequent the Casa de Salud with their parents, One Small House recently built a new playground and recreational area for the center. In addition, volunteers have procured medical equipment to be used by the staff. With a growing reach in the community, the Casa de Salud has been able to positively impact hundreds of families. As they continue to make huge differences in the community, One Small House looks forward to growing with the Casa de Salud.
